ChurchWebsites, a subsidiary of Churchwide Communications, offered affordable website creation and hosting services. However, we soon discovered that many churches did not have the same capital or operating budgets of many secular businesses. Oftentimes, the cost of developing a new website from scratch was prohibitive for a growing church. In addition, the task of maintaining the site required a maintenance contract or finding a church volunteer who would become the church's programmer. These "stumbling blocks" kept many churches from being able to launch the kind of website that was necessary to communicate their message.

We realized that we had to rethink the website development process if we were to succeed in pioneering a website solution for churches. First, we needed to identify all the pitfalls of traditional web development and address each one. Over the years, various churches told us that the website process was too hard, too slow, too costly, lacking content or difficult to do well.
